This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 2nd grade at a low-income public elementary school with over 1,000 students.

My students face immense challenges outside of school that they can't control.

What they can control is their learning and how they will succeed through hard work and determination. Even though they have challenges outside my classroom, they always bring their enthusiasm to learn and their drive to better themselves every day to class. I know my students will be successful because I truly believe in all of them.

My Project

Students work best when they work together. It's all about learning and growing together. I want to create a student-centered classroom where students take charge of what they learn. This does NOT happen when a teacher does all the talking. Real learning happens when children are working together, talking together, collaborating, and having hands-on, minds-on experiences that make sense to them. Putting computers in the hands of our students is going to help them grow to be technology native users ready for the upper grades. Without having access to computers on a regular basis, it is hard for students to get the time needed to be proficient in them.

The games are what's essential for kids to learn certain math, reading, and writing skills, but it also teaches how to work together and how to solve problems in a group - essential skills for the workplace!

The journals are a tool I use every year for students to take what they learn and crystallize it by documenting their learning. It's a learning tool that they use at school, but also at home. The parents will love it as well.

The mobile teaching station is going to be used for Writer's Workshop. It provides my students with a central place to get the writing materials they need to write amazing narratives, bossy opinion pieces, and books all about the things they're experts on. Because it's mobile, it can easily be wheeled to convenient places where my students can get their materials, and then be tucked away as we work on science, math, or engineering.
