My students need a sensory table with items included that will help them to explore different curricula. These items include hands on literacy and math manipulatives.
My students are joyful and come to the classroom full of energy. In order to make the most of their time and channel this energy, it is important to have a variety of multi-sensory materials to engage all learners. Things like kinetic sand with letter and number molds make learning fun!
My students are mostly immigrants from Russia, Burma, Thailand, Nepal, Mexico and Somalia.
Often my classroom is their first school experience. Over 95% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch meaning that they come from households that live in poverty. I have 25 Kindergarteners, with 10 different languages represented.
My Project
Students will have an area in the classroom dedicated to sensory. There will be a sensory table, and depending on our unit of study, there will be materials in the sensory table related to the unit, such as dinosaur bones with letters on them. It may be matching capital letter rocks with lowercase letter rocks, or finding numbers by digging in sand. They will use fishing poles to "fish" for sight words. Students will increase literacy and math skills, and also work on using their little fingers to enhance their writing skills. Students will have fidget toys like squishy balls to keep their busy hands moving and work on fine motor skills. I also asked for a laminator, so I will be able to laminate things such as paper letters and numbers and math boardgames so they will last from year to year for student use.
These materials will make a significant difference for the students in my classroom.
They will be provided with fun, engaging materials that help them learn early literacy skills such as letters, math skills like number recognition and number order, and helping with pencil grip and finger and hand strength.
