My students need award winning books for our school library, including Newbery, Belpre, Silbert, and ALSC Notable Children's Books award winners and honor books. A label printer is needed to put the Dewey number on books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in a high poverty area in Baltimore City. It is a Title I school with over 400 students in grades pre-k to five. My students love to read. They get excited about new books I introduce. Unfortunately, engaging books are not easy to come by.
Many of my students do not have books in their home.
Most of those that do have books received used ones from the school. Checking out books from our school library each week provides students with greater access to books.
My Project
My school library currently has 4,399 books, which is far below the recommended amount of 10,000 books for elementary school libraries. Of those 4,399 books, less than 10% are highly recommended books for school libraries according to Wilson's Children's Core Collection. Even more worrisome is that less than 5% of the books are award winners!
I want my students to develop a lifelong love of reading and providing them with high quality, award winning books can help achieve that.
I am requesting books from several different award sources. The Newbery award is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Newbery award and honor books I am requesting include the 2018 Medal Winner, Hello, Universe and the 2018 Honor Books, Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut and Piecing Me Together.
The Pure Belpre award goes to a latino/latina writer and illustrator whose children's literature portrays and celebrates latino culture. Examples of books I am requesting that won this award or honor are Lucky Broken Girl and La Princesa and the Pea. The Robert F. Silbert award goes to the most distinguished informational book of the previous year. Some of the winning books for this medal that I have included are Twelve Days in May: Freedom Ride 1961 and Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream. I also included books from the Association for Library Service to Children Notable Book lists.
Also included in this request is labels and a label writer. This allows me to print labels for each book with the Dewey Decimal number on the book so the book can be placed on the library shelves.
This wide range of award winners provides a diverse selection of books for my students to read and enjoy for many years to come!
