My Students

My classroom is made up of seven 3-5 year olds with a diagnosis of autism. I have two wonderful paraprofessionals in the classroom, as well. Each child is unique in their needs and how we service them. We are lucky to be housed in a school with a large special education community, servicing 17 ASD classrooms.

We are a Title I school system that represents over 130 countries.

Every student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that outlines their goals and service needs for the school year. As teachers, we must target each skill by differentiating our lesson plans by adapting materials and motivating and reinforcing our students based on their unique learning styles.

My Project

My students learn using principles outlined in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Specifically, the adults in the classroom (behavior therapists and teachers) use positive reinforcement to effectively make progress on IEP objectives, which range from self-regulation goals to academics to decreasing maladaptive behaviors.

Each student receives small and large group support daily.

Within our schedule, we use 1:1 discreet trials to increase engagement and progress. However, the children are very distractible during these sessions and we lack the furniture to effectively complete several work stations at once.

The room divider would be of great assistance to minimize distractions and increase engagement. In addition, the carpets in the classroom are extremely old and have been given a little too much love. I have replaced a majority of the carpets but we still lack a main Circle Time rug. By creating a safe and appropriate classroom for my students, I believe we will see a large increase in skills and a decrease in behaviors.
