Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are wonderful, caring, hardworking students. One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch, a full third of our students are English Learners (EL) and some students have never had access to any form of schooling or education. Many of our students are currently living in poverty and struggle to purchase basic necessities.

Our students hard work and dedication in the face of adversity is an inspiration to all those that tirelessly work with them day in and day out.

The students in my school never give up, never surrender, and love to explore their world. Despite the hardships that they might face, they never fail to arrive bright and early to school with a smile on their face, even if they lack pencils, a bookbag, or a jacket in the winter.

My Project

My hope in this project is that through your love and support, we can create a safe, calm space to help students in crisis find effective ways to self-regulate. The materials that are listed have been researched and I have relied on, "The Trauma-Informed School" by Jim Sporleder and Heather T. Forbes to help narrow down effective items for my students.

It is my hope to treat trauma with not only love and support but with 21st century research to best serve students in need.

These items allow for self-soothing, parallel play and support, and working one-on-one with students as the need arises. It is my hope that this space can be a model for positive behavior modification and supports that can better address the wants and needs of our school, students, and families. These items are chosen to first create a soft and comfortable ambiance, with light filters to block out the very bright and glaring fluorescent lights in the class, calming music and dancing lights being utilized to soothe as the student enters, and comfortable beanbags to help make the transition seamless. Once the student is acclimated, the items chosen for self-soothing were picked to allow the student to work with or parallel to a caring adult. Some items are picked to help children with sensory needs or disorders such as the kinetic sand or the fidget toys and others have very little sensory input at all such as the coloring books. All of these items were selected from research to be designed to help students with trauma get comfortable, relaxed, and able to self-regulate.
