Creating a Stem Maker Space

My students need a Professional Airbrushing Kit, Flower Press, Acrylic paint and SunPrint paper kits, brushes and paint sets in order to expand their STEM Maker Space.

My Students

Imagine you're an artist at heart but you have to explain your work as a scientist. How interested would you be in class? Well, my students are talented artists who also love science. A typical day in our classroom might involve them painting the ecosystem of a shark to show comprehension.

My students are energetic busy twelve-year-olds with a lot of questions and a need to investigate them all.

Our school is a new science school and we are in our 2nd year. We are located in the heart of East Flatbush Brooklyn where most students struggle. We are a Title I school where most of our students receive free lunch. Our school is one of four science schools in the community. Our students are extremely intelligent and look forward to entering science competitions such as the SSEP Space Station challenge that we competed in last year, as well as other science competitions. My students want to be able to showcase their knowledge of science and become involve in learning about and coming up with solutions to everyday problems, such as the rise in carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. As a STEM school we are creating an environment were students can have a space to build and create. Because my students are wonderful artists, we are including art in our STEM to create a STEAM program.

My Project

Supplies such as the Flower and Leaf Press will allow students to collect and maintain samples of the flowers in our community as they explore different ecosystems and the types of flowers that attract bees to our community. Presently, if my students want to build models to represent their ideas, we have to borrow paint, markers, as well as brushes from our Art teacher, rather than have them in our own classroom. The brushes, paint, and the professional airbrush system will allow students to use stencils to represent their ideas as well as use sun print paper to capture imprints of flowers and other objects that they are observing on field trips.

Helping us to purchase these supplies will help us to expand our Maker Space for all of our students, especially our artistic and creative students who enjoy thinking out of the box when creating their projects.
