My Students
I serve as the media specialist at a school with over 1250 students. My students have expressed their desire to innovate and explore subjects that interest them during class, at STEM Night, at Tech Club, at Mad Science Club, and during their visits to the media center. They have impressed me in the past with the projects they have been able to create with minimal supplies.
My goal is to help them learn how to utilize the technology and resources available to them to learn new concepts, innovate, and develop their critical thinking skills.
My Project
I would like to provide a makerspace for the students at my school. A makerspace is a place for students to explore, create, and invent. Students are able to analyze ideas, solve problems, and express their creativity by utilizing the technology and materials available at our school to develop projects and inventions.
My school has been incorporating personalized learning in the classroom for the past four years, and a makerspace would be an incredible way for students to explore questions and problems while pulling from their own strengths and interests.
Makerspaces create a safe environment in which students are free to explore creatively to learn how to solve a problem. Instead of focusing on whether answer is right or wrong, students are able to explore different solutions based on their strengths and interests to see what works and what doesn’t work. They are able to learn through creating, which is much more motivating and interesting than passively receiving and regurgitating information provided by their teacher. Therefore, makerspaces empower students, because they are in charge of their learning, and provide differentiated instruction, since students are exploring a concept based on their own interests and abilities.
Makerspaces also provide an opportunity for students prepare for their future careers and as members in society. Students are required to manage their time while completing tasks throughout their project, and they must learn when it is time to try a new approach if the method they are using is not successful. Student can also learn how to collaboratively. They must learn to interact with a team to solve a problem. Even if they are not working with a team students can collaborate by asking the students around them what worked for them and what didn’t as they were completing the task.
