Creating a Space of Reset and SEL Learning for Teens

Help me give my students a welcoming space with resources to help them manage their emotions and thrive socially and emotionally at school and beyond.

My Project

My students are amazing! They are bright, inquisitive, goofy, independent, resilient, and brimming with potential. They are also navigating the delicate journey from childhood, to adolescence, to young adulthood, and they are doing this in a low-income, rural community where resources are limited and significant hardships are not uncommon. As the first school counselor at our Charter school, I am committed to building the counseling department my students need and deserve.

These materials will be the first resources that help turn an empty, cold office into a welcoming, safe space where my students can come to reset and explore the self-knowledge and skills they need to thrive at school and beyond.

This small list of materials includes books that will start a collection of advice books for teens, that I hope one day will develop into a lending library. The list also includes fidgets that have proven effective in helping teens calm down and focus. Finally, there are a couple items that will help make the space more welcoming by creating an organized environment that promotes calm.
