Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine if you felt as if you had nowhere to turn. If your parents were absent most of your life and school is your only safe haven. For the students at New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math & Science II, these struggles are something they experience everyday.
We refer to the students at AMS II as scholars.
We hold each and every student to high expectations because we know their potential. Our students come to school with a positive attitude each day, often leaving behind the hardships that they experience at home. In doing so, they create a positive environment for themselves and the staff. We are a big family.
My Project
As the school counselor in a high need area in the Bronx, I have students in and our of my office all day. They come to me to vent, seek advice but most often, as someone who listens. In my past work experiences, having a couch for students to sit on during counseling sessions allows for a more relaxed environment. Students open up as they feel at home allowing our sessions to be meaningful and productive thus assisting them on their academic, social and emotional success.
My project is important because the value of the relationships I have with my students is priceless.
Knowing that I provide a sense of comfort and support for them they that may not receive at home is the most fulfilling experience. Maybe they go home to take care of their younger siblings each day after school, or go home to their parents fighting. Having a couch in my office for my counseling sessions would assist in providing at least one therapeutic environment for them.
