Creating a Safe & Clean Space for PreK ABA

My Students

My classroom is made up of nine 3-5 year olds with a diagnosis of autism. I have two wonderful paraprofessionals in the classroom, as well. Each child is unique in their needs and how we service them. We are lucky to be housed in a school with a large special education community, servicing 18 ASD classrooms.

We are a Title I school system that represents over 130 countries.

Every student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that outlines their goals and service needs for the school year. As teachers, we must target each skill by differentiating our lesson plans by adapting materials and motivating and reinforcing our students based on their unique learning styles.

My Project

Our district will be kicking off the year remotely, but quickly transitioning to a hybrid model that has our highest need students in the classroom 4 times a week. The expectation is that the kids remain socially distant from one another and that there are no shared materials. Since the students in my room are aged 3-5 years old, and many exhibit sensory aversions, there is no expectation for them to be masked. In addition, the adults in the classroom provide physical prompting throughout the day to help with successful learning and behavior management. Therefore, it will be very difficult for the adults to socially distance themselves from the students throughout the day, which is why I am asking for PPE for my classroom staff.

I am asking for help preparing my classroom and my staff to meet DESE expectations while limiting our exposure to germs.

I am hoping to provide each student with their own bin of materials, as well as their own workspace at a table or on the floor. My students do really well with sensory play and I plan on providing each of them with their own sensory station as a movement break. The students will remain in the classroom for the entire day and I think it is extremely important to provide them with sensory input and movement opportunities.

Lastly, I am asking for assistance in creating a structured classroom to help my students with ASD understand the expectations of each area of the room. I am hoping to use tape to mark off each area and replacing rugs with play mats to maintain a safe and inviting play space. I fully expect this year to be full of challenges, but I hope to create some sort of normalcy for them!
