Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach behavioral and social skills to students in grades kindergarten through third grade. My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including many who are currently or were once refugees. My school is a Title I school with 100% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is a second home for many students and the only place many students feel safe or comfortable to be themselves.

Social-emotional learning is a critical component of learning for children in America today. In order to truly prepare future generations, it is critical that students today are equipped with behavioral and social skills that will assist them in being successful in all areas of life. Many of my students have been impacted by traumatic experiences and it is my goal to provide them as safe and stable of an environment at school as possible. I teach my students how to handle all that life will throw at them academically and personally through social skills and emotional literacy techniques.
My Project
A major part of trauma informed care is creating safe and stable relationships with students. This sofa will be used in my classroom where I work with students in small groups and individually. Students come to me when dealing with personal family problems as well as social problems here in the school. As an educator I try to provide a comforting space for students to open up and really get to know their emotions and develop skills that will benefit them their whole lives.
Students who are able to regulate emotions and deal with real-world problems are needed today more than ever.
My goal is to support each student at Desert Garden in whatever way they need. I am hoping to set up my room with comfortable seating that encourages students to focus on their social and emotional well-being each and every day.
