This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All of the students who will benefit from this project participate in a therapeutic, self-contained, special education program. Our students receive services due to social, emotional, and behavioral issues. These students are all identified as high risk due to their ongoing history of disengagement from school based on trauma, truancy, academic barriers, and behavioral needs.
The students in the program struggle with their motivation and engagement in school due to a history of academic and behavioral difficulties.
The complications with Covid-19 have further impacted their disengagement. Students are concerned about their health and safety when coming to school, but struggle to maintain consistency and focus when trying to learn virtually.
We have established incentive programs that highlight and reward positive student behaviors and increased engagement. We specifically asked our kids what they wanted to earn through our system and they identified the items we hope to purchase through this project. Our students have also expressed that the RISE Academy at Hartford High feels like their second home and they have asked for whole program community activities such as breakfasts, lunches, team building activities, and group projects which will allow them to grow closer together and build a stronger community.
My Project
The items that I am requesting will be used for various incentives that we use within the RISE program to encourage the continued engagement of our students, especially during this very difficult year.
The students in the RISE Academy are frequently rewarded for their hard work, engagement in classes and school-based activities, meeting certain behavioral expectations, and achievement towards specific personalized goals.
The items in this project have been specifically requested by the students as items they are interested in earning, or items that the staff in the program will be able to use to organize incentive days.
The students have also asked for our classrooms to be made into safe and calming spaces for them and throughout the school year, we have been able to invest in items, such as the oils and diffusers in this project, which will transform our traditional classroom setting into a space where our students feel comfortable and able to focus on the work they need to do to graduate and achieve post-secondary success.
