Creating a Representative and Compassionate Classroom Library - Part 1

Help me give my students books for our classroom library that reflect their interests and lived experiences and provide a sense of compassion and empathy for those whose lived experiences are different from their own.

My Project

My students are diverse learners with unique interests and preferences regarding what they want to and are willing to read. With no school library, the only books available to students are in poor condition and are woefully outdated. Often these books are not representative of our students or the world we live in today. My students are diverse learners with unique interests and preferences regarding what they want to and are willing to read. Additionally the books they do have access to are limited in their ability to show students what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes.

Over the course of the year, I have spoken to students about their interests, what kind of books they have enjoyed in the past, and researched recommendations for young adult texts extensively to curate a list of books that I am confident my students will connect with and which will foster compassion for others in reading their stories.

With the addition of several Manga titles and graphic novels to the already vast range of topics represented, I believe that there is something in our new classroom library for everybody. It is my hope that each of my students will be able to find a text that they connect with and want to take home to keep. By offering a large, diverse collection of texts for students to access, it is my hope that our classroom library is where they will find *that* book that sparks a lifelong love of reading.
