Creating a Physical Space for Learning!

My students need balance cushions to sit on when they are reading, writing, or discussing in class. The kiddos are great at paying attention, but sitting on something like this can give them even more stamina!

My Students

My students are from a rural community in Wisconsin that is a short drive from a tourist town. Thus, many families have seasonal work, and struggle to provide school supplies, books, and other such items some take for granted.

My students are incredibly caring and hardworking.

They understand the value of material possessions, and thus treat anything in the room with great respect.

Lastly, my students LOVE reading. It baffles me at times how much they really do just want to curl up with a good book and read- and they are in middle school. I have an open policy when it comes to what you can "read for credit" in my class, and it shows. The past few years they have grown into avid readers, and thus learners. The empathy and experiences they can gain from books fills my teacher heart and makes this job even more incredible.

My Project

Balance cushions are an easy way to help students pay more attention in class. It is hard to sit still in school for 8 hours! These cushions would be placed on their chairs on days when they need a little more physical stimulation, but activity is not available.

I chose these cushions because they are discreet, no one is singled out or has to have a "special chair." Unlike stress balls, the cushions help students focus without other students seeing movement out of the corner of an eye.

This way, the student get the physical energy out, but can still read, write, research, and participate in discussion. We all have days when we need a little more help to focus, please help my students with this!
