My Project

Do you know your daily average screen time for this week? I'm around 2 hours. My teenage students average around 9 hours, ranging anywhere from 7 to as much as 12 hours of daily screen time! I've generally tried throughout my teaching career to avoid the old-man-shouting-at-kids-on-his-lawn view of the rise of the smartphone. Yes, I told myself, they've come at the expense of productivity, attention-spans, and reading for enjoyment among my students, but the telephone killed letter-writing and the internet turned encyclopedia sets into really effective doorstops. Every technology makes something obsolete, I concluded, and humans have adapted in the past, how is this newest technological trend any different? Not anymore.

I now see phone-use by my students in the same way I view smoking cigarettes, an incredibly addictive habit that negatively impacts their health.

We're beginning to get a clearer picture of the effects that having unregulated use of a smartphone from the age of 11/12 has wrought: decreased learning/cognitive growth and increased depression/anxiety. Yet we still don't know the full effect this unregulated use is having on children during the crucial years of brain development.

In my classroom where I teach English and Math, the effect is clear. More than any other obstacle my students face (and there are many), their phones inhibit their learning. It has also become clear to me that for most of my students we are past the point of preaching self-regulation. I would like to have a phone locker where students will be able to securely store their phone during class where they know only they will have access to it. It is my hope with the phones safely stored, we will begin to regain some of the life and skills that have been lost. Thank you!
