Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with an incredible group of 9th and 10th grade students in ELA class. My students challenge themselves on a daily basis to become excellent readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers - and their talents regularly amaze me. In addition to learning from my students’ perspectives on the world, I have learned a lot about learning itself from our years together. One key takeaway has been that students learn best when they are in a physical classroom environment that is flexible, has resources that can meet both their academic and basic needs, and is calm and welcoming.

My students deserve a space that is comfortable and safe, shows them that they are valued, and meets their basic needs so that they can focus fully on learning.

Therefore, this year, I am focusing on raising donations to enhance my classroom's physical environment.

With your support, I will create a comfortable, welcoming environment by filling my classroom with lamps to replace harsh fluorescent lighting, flexible seating options, and plants (all of which studies show benefit student well-being!). I also hope to purchase vibrant learning materials, such as new books, fresh writing supplies, and adaptive tools.

Additionally, last year I set up a self-serve resource cart that included personal hygiene items, mental health resources, fidget tools, extra school supplies, and healthy snacks. Over the course of the year, students made good use of these resources. They shared that the cart allowed them take care of basic needs that might have otherwise hindered that day's learning - and, in a small way, that it made them feel cared for as full people. I hope to replenish and add to this resource cart so that it can continue to serve my students well this year.
