"The human brain develops most rapidly between birth and age 5 making the preschool years a crucial part of a child's education." by Angela Thayer. My children will use these books in the listening center to help develop a love of reading.
My class consists of 20 students all age 4.
They are a happy bunch of energetic kids that are eager to learn and help each other. Our school is in the inner-city of Chicago with 99% of our students living in poverty. Many of my students come from homes where they do not have books or any reading materials. Many of my students begin school at a disadvantage because they have not had exposure to the alphabet, vocabulary, or reading materials.
My students enjoy having stories read to them. Throughout the day, I read to my class three different times and I provide time for them to read quietly to themselves or with a friend. This is not enough for them. Listening to these stories will help my students build sight word recognition and vocabulary; develop listening skills; hear more complex stories than ones they can read to themselves; exposure to a variety of genres, and hearing the phrasing and fluency of a story read correctly. Most importantly, it will help my students develop a love of reading. These books with Cd's will be used during center times to give the children opportunities to listen to these stories.
Receiving the books for my listening center will improve my classroom by making a difference in my students lives.
Students will have time throughout the day to listen to the stories on CD. As I stated before, listening to audio books increases the students vocabulary, fluency, listening skills, and the ability to hear stories at a more complex level than they can read to themselves. My goal is to have my students develop a love of reading that will carry them throughout their lives.
