Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every afternoon, just after lunch and yoga my students and I meet on the carpet, surrounded by comfy pillows and lit up by our small "reading lamps", for our daily read aloud. As the words "quietly walk to the carpet for our read aloud" leave my lips I hear whispers of, "yessssss!" that make me smile. As a first grade teacher it is not only my obligation and passion to teach my students to read but also to instill a love for reading in each and every one of them.
One monthly project I work on with my students to help explore different children's books in hopes of sparking their wide variety of interests is "Author of the Month". Through "Author of the Month" my students investigate and learn about a specific author using the internet and other resources, do small projects specific to the author's books and end with a "Meet the Author Celebration" where a guest visitor comes in and tells stories and answers questions as if he or she is the author. The students love it!
The school I work in is brand new and in some ways a work in progress. We are still working to build our school library as well as fill our classroom libraries. The majority of my students does not have many books at home and depend on their school for books. I frequently visit the Los Angeles Central Public library for resources and check out books for my students to read in the classroom. I would, however, love to let my students take books by our "Author of the Month" home to read and share with their families and spread a love for reading. I am asking for a donation of Dr. Seuss books, Eric Carle books, and Shel Silverstein books for a class of 20 first graders. I greatly appreciate your consideration.
