"I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage."~ Roald Dahl
My students enter my classroom ready to see what school is about.
As a Kindergarten teacher, I am responsible for introducing many of my students to school. For many of them, I am the first school teacher they will encounter. Over the years, Kindergarten Curriculum has become more and more rigorous. The work we create can be challenging and scary to many students. It is my job to instill a love of learning, a joy in reading, and a desire it become a life-long learner.
My Project
During Reading Rotations, students will listen to a book on CD with a partner. This center activity will benefit my Kindergarten students in many ways. During the first few months of the school year, students will be able to practice their new knowledge about print. They will be able to follow along with the reader using 1:1 word correspondence and following left to right with a return sweep. As my students become more comfortable with books in their hands and are able to recognize simple sight words, they will be able to read along with the reader as much as possible. Hearing books read to them on CD will help each student hear various examples of what a fluent reader sounds like, while allowing them to focus on their comprehension skills.
In order to help students become successful in the real-world, they need to understand print, how print contains a message, and how to read and decode unknown words.
Having a listening center within the classroom will allow my Kindergartners to practice their reading skills independently. My students will become more confident in their reading abilities and be more willing to challenge themselves.
