Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students are attending high school in the poorest, most segregated urban center in the United States. Few students are coming from homes with print-rich environments despite the importance of ensuring that they leave the secondary educational space with a love for reading and writing.

These texts will be the first group of books used to launch an in-class lending library created and procured to foster more independent reading and to support the growing and emerging identities of all of my students.

It is imperative for my students to have more choice in the selection of titles and subjects if I want to positively impact their desire to read more. Many of these titles were specifically requested by my students in an interest survey they recently completed.
