Students in the special education classrooms have varied needs, both academically and behaviorally. Students with autism, Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety, auditory sensitivity, sensory processing disorder and specific learning disabilities are included in the population of students served in my classroom.
My students benefit from being in an environment that balances optimizing learning opportunity and emotional wellness.
I want to continue to create a classroom that functions well for academic and also creates safe spaces for quite time and self calming.
My Project
I would like to enhance our learning space by adding some carpeting for both reading nooks and sensory needs. Our classroom feels a bit sterile at times with cold tile flooring, and needs something more welcoming for kids. Additionally I am requesting a laminator and laminating pouches to help build re-usable materials and activities for our students who need to follow set routines on a daily basis. With these items I can create a sensory friendly, organized, predictable environment in my classroom.
I also would like to create a reading nook for students.
My vision is to create a space that students will be "device free" solely for the enjoyment of reading.
