Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Preschool in Potrero CA, east of San Diego and about 10 minutes from the Tecate Mexico border. The majority of my students are low income, but that does not in any way change their love for learning. Their little eyes light up whenever they see and learn something new. Most are also Spanish speaking, so coming into my classroom they will be able to work on their English through play and conversation with teachers and peers. When our students enter our classroom they are met with love and joy, a lot of which some do not receive that due to home situations.

My Project

Children learn mostly when they are met with materials and items they are familiar with. Research has shown that classrooms that are set up with more natural and home like materials, tend to help students focus and learn better in the classroom. In my classroom I would like to create a home like experience with our Dramatic Play area. Through this area our students learn important social and emotional skills, like how to work together, as well how to take care of a home and create new and healthy foods. Even during this time students are engaged and their language skills are growing. Math skills flourish, friendships are made, and the ability to create a nature-aligned, heart-centered, sensory-based, and authentically inspired area of play.
