Our students are a glorious mix of diversity. I teach 8th grade math at a middle school in Honolulu, HI. Together with 9 phenomenal teachers, we teach a team of 120 students, Kupa’a Team, at a Title I school. Our students may speak different languages, come from different cultures, family environments, and socioeconomic backgrounds, but they are all caring, compassionate students, hard working kids who bring joy and laughter to our classrooms every day.
We long to make our “Kupa’a hallway” a more cheerful space for students.
We want them to be greeted with a bright and inviting environment so that when they enter our classrooms, they are upbeat and ready to learn. We’ve always decorated the bulletin boards but now, we want to go bigger, and repaint the entire hallway, with a dramatic and bold mural, designed by a Kupa’a alumni. We believe that the foundation of learning is built on relationships, between students and teachers and between students themselves. One of the best ways to build relationships is by doing things together, in this case, painting the hallway together at the beginning of the next school year. Your donations will cover the cost of supplies such as paint brushes and painting tape so that we can revive our hallway.
We would also like to use wallspace to create a gallery of former Kupa’s students showing current students what they are doing today. We envision the wall to represent all opportunities from the workforce as well as college–we have alumni in the military, construction, healthcare, education and more. The gallery wall will inspire our students, show them that so many opportunities await them. Donations to purchase a color printer and acrylic frames will help us make our gallery wall a reality.
