Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you believe that the arts are an important part of a child's education? Our drama program is only in its second year, and we need selections of plays and collections of scenes and monologues to work with.

I teach at an urban middle school in southern California.

Most of my students are considered at-risk simply because of where our school is located. My students have confided that they are surrounded by gangs in their neighborhoods and drugs are easily accessible. However, they leave all of that at the door to come into my class to learn something new. My students are motivated, intelligent and willing to learn. They are inspired and inspiring. They make going to work everyday a joy.

My Project

With this collection of plays, monologues, and scenes my students will be able to stretch themselves in terms of acting, but they will also be able to discover new literature to awaken their imagination. This collection includes Shakespeare, Latino playwrights, and collections especially written for middle school aged students. This literature will not only help them in our drama class but will increase their reading comprehension skills and possibly introduce them to literature that will enhance life long reading for pleasure. We will be able to engage in lessons that will help them break down plays in literary terms and discover the joys and relevance of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. With a class set of the No Fear Shakespeare edition, they will be able to understand Shakespeare and feel a sense of accomplishment in breaking down the language and relating to some of the most beautiful words ever written.

This collection of plays will have a lasting impact on our school's drama program.

Since this is a new program at our middle school, we don't have many resources from which to work with. These books will be a tremendous resource for not only my classes but for many more to come. This project will provide learning opportunities for literally hundreds of students.
