Creating A Deeper Understanding Of Fractions

My Students

Do you remember why a fraction divided by a fraction is a bigger number or a fraction multiplied by a fraction is a smaller number? One of the many uses of cuisanaire rods is to assist students in visualizing and comprehending why these concept are true.

Our school district covers 151 square miles and includes three small rural communities.

We have 156 students in grades 6-8, and 24% of our students come from families of low socio-economic status. The majority of our families live in our small communities and commute to jobs in nearby metro areas. Only a small percentage of our students live on farms. Our students have positive attitudes, strong work ethics, and caring hearts. Our students learn best when given opportunities to interact with manipulative and engage in hands-on learning that leads to deeper conceptual understanding of abstract mathematical concepts.

My Project

The cuisenaire rods will be able to help all of the students grades six through eight with their understanding of fractions. The National Council of Teacher of Mathematics has developed activities that involve the use of the cuisenaire rods. The rods are precisely measured so certain rods are a ratio to other rods allowing students to see relationships between fractions and how operations relate to each other.

These rods will be used in all math classes at the middle school from 6th grade math to 8th grade algebra.

They will allow students to see accurate relationships between the different colored rods and help develop a deeper understanding of fractions and their relationships. The cuisinaire rods will help the learning of the struggling learner to the advanced student.
