The poet Emily Dickinson spoke to the transportive power of reading when she said, "There is no frigate like a book." To create a culture of reading in my classroom, I set aside one day a week for silent reading when my 9-12th grade students can choose any book, comic, or magazine they want to read for fun. Many of them look forward to that day all week. I love how some students pore over the poetry of Tupac Shakur, while others get carried away in Kazui Kibuishi's graphic novels. Some prefer to study the stats of their favorite athletes, while others shiver at the spine-tingling tales of Stephen King. I have some students, however, who claim they "don't read" or even "hate reading."
Maybe it's because I'm an English teacher, but I believe a student who thinks they don't like reading simply hasn't found the right book yet—one that sparks their imagination and takes them where they want to go.
To that end, I continue to create projects to expand my classroom library. Before now, I have purchased most of our books with my own money and brought them into my classroom to share with students, hoping they will learn to love reading as much as I do.
This project will focus on increasing the number of books in the Ukrainian language and about Ukrainian culture in our classroom library. The list of requested materials includes a range of grade-level appropriate, high-interest fiction and non-fiction titles, so we can continue to create a culture of reading for all students.
