My students need a more diverse reading selection. I want to create a library where students can find people like them going through similar struggles. This list includes characters who represent my diverse classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My humanities classroom is a place where students are both challenged and loved every day. Through the study of history we engage in meaningful discussions about both current events and how each of us plays an essential part in creating a positive future.
My students are a fantastic group of hard working, resilient, creative kids who are excited about learning.
Our school is a rigorous, loving, inclusive environment that pushes our students daily to challenge themselves and excel not only in academics, but in leadership as well. We serve a mainly low-income, ethnically and culturally diverse population. The core principles of our school that we strive to teach every day as part of our curriculum are writing, service learning, STEM, and resiliency.
My Project
My students need more books that are representative of their racial and cultural diversity. As a new teacher I'm still in the process of building my library and I know how important it is for students to see themselves in what they read. In my humanities class we spend time looking at the big ideas of history while relating it to current events and their own lives.
Books can be mirrors in which children see and savor images and representations similar to their own lives and experiences.
They can also be windows that enable young readers to gain new cultural perspectives by peering into others’ worlds (Bishop 1990; Botelho & Rudman 2009). Teachers and other caring adults can make the most of these mirrors and windows by selecting literature that represents the diverse experiences of children and using it effectively to develop culturally responsive classrooms that promote color awareness and social justice (Paley 1998; Laminack & Wadsworth 2012)
