Creating a Creative Learning Environment for the Lucky 18
My students need alternative seating and new reading materials for me to support their critical thinking while playing and learning in an alternative classroom setting.
We are a small, rural school in eastern Colorado. I have the opportunity to work with amazing, talented, and kind students every day. I am a first-year teacher, and I am working hard to give my students a 2nd-grade experience they deserve. My class consists of 18 students; 10 boys and 8 girls. I am blessed to have a wide variety of talent in my students, which unfortunately is accompanied by socioeconomic challenges on a daily basis.
It is my goal to challenge my students by provoking critical thinking by offering new age-appropriate reading materials in conjunction with alternative seating.
I have noticed, over the weeks, that my students work better when they are not restricted to one seat all day. As of now, we have a carpet area and student tables.
My Project
Research has shown that students have better learning opportunities in creative and healthy learning environments. Alternative seating is the beginning of creating a modern and creative classroom.
Some of my students like to sit on the floor and the disks, floor chairs, and the lap desks will help students to sit alone if wanted and get work completed.
In addition, the round floor table is a great opportunity for students to complete group projects in an nontraditional way.
Students seem to be open to new experiences and nontraditional methods of learning when they have fun and get to explore with their peers. Alternative seating, with new literature, is a new and exciting way to get the creative mind flowing.
