My students need a well-organized bookshelf, an eye-catching book display, and comfortable, easy to clean seating where they can curl up and read or listen to a good book.

My Students
We have approximately 900 students at our school. Ninety percent of our students are Latino and 76% are from low-income families. About 11% of our students are considered special needs. Our students come from hard-working, loving families that want to see their children succeed.
My students are eager to learn and happy to be in school; however, school is challenging for some students who lack social skills, such as the ability to make friends, manage their emotions and/or resolve conflicts positively.
My Project
My project will help create an inviting and cozy book nook in the school counselor’s office where literature will be used to support good mental health. Reading together, in individual or small group sessions, is a wonderful way to reach out and connect with students who are in special circumstances.
Having a comfortable and organized reading area will allow me to read stories to students about characters who have successfully resolved a dilemma similar to their own.
Since some students have difficulty identifying and communicating their feelings, stories can serve to facilitate open discussion and self-understanding. If children become emotionally involved with literary characters, they are more able to verbalize, act out, or draw pictures describing their innermost thoughts.
