Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.” R.J. Palacio, Wonder
My goal is to create a community of kindness within my classroom, and then have my students spread this kindness through our school and community.
I have a class of 32 fifth graders.
The majority of them are second language learners and come from a background of poverty and lack of academic role models. Without many books in their homes and no ease of access to a public library, they have not had much exposure to literature other than what they receive at school. They all need to work on improving their comprehension skills and in order to do that, I need to supply them with engaging books to read. I also want teach that small acts of kindness can make huge differences in people's lives. We will be reading the books I have requested, and discussing how we can all become kinder and more compassionate citizens.
My Project
With these books, I will share examples of kindness and compassion towards everyone and acceptance of all people with my students. It is my hope and intention that my students will become models of kindness and compassion at our school and will spread kindness and compassion everywhere they go!
In addition to creating a community of kindness through literature, my students will be working on improving their comprehension, language, writing, and speaking skills.
We will be discussing how simple, small acts of kindness and compassion can make a huge difference in someone else's life.
This project will not only benefit my students, but hopefully they can become positive examples for others.
