"Reading gives us somewhere to go when we have to stay where we are".
I am a teacher of 12 special education students in Brooklyn, NY.
Our students come to us with a variety of challenges from behavioral issues to learning disabilities. They love coming to school because it is their safe place and a place where they are encouraged to do their best. It is my goal to create a classroom that is welcoming and comfortable so that when they are having a rough time or simply want to read a book they can be as relaxed as possible. Currently our classroom has no area where they can do that. I am hoping to build a quiet reading corner that they will look forward to sitting in.
My Project
When students feel anxious or are having a difficult time controlling their behavior, I allow them to make a positive choice by sitting in a designated quiet area where they can calm down and rejoin the class when they feel ready. This allows them to learn to have control over their behaviors. I am also teaching them to build reading stamina and one of the ways I am doing this is by making reading enjoyable and one of the basic ways I can help is to make them comfortable. It is my hope that they learn to gain self-control and develop a love for reading by getting a medium round bean bag for the reading area.
By simply providing beans bags, my students will hopefully look forward to independent reading time and in time become better readers!
They will also be provided with a space that is comfortable and inviting so they can enjoy the classroom even more.
