This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students are bright, courageous, and full of energy. It is essential to match their vibrant spirit with a comforting and supportive environment that nurtures their learning experience, especially during Speech. Currently, our speech space functions primarily as a small classroom with general seating. However, I aim to transform it into a more inviting and comfortable space tailored specifically to their unique needs. Providing a slower-paced, sensory-friendly environment can greatly enhance students’ motivation and increase their engagement with speech activities, ultimately supporting their progress in communication skills.

To create this calming atmosphere, specific items such as small desk fans, batteries, and a digital clock are essential.

These tools help cultivate a space that is responsive to students’ needs, promotes emotional regulation, and is critical for effective speech learning. For example, when students feel overwhelmed or frustrated, desk fans provide a soothing source of cool air, helping them calm down and refocus on their speech exercises. The digital clock provides a clear sense of time, which fosters independence and control, which are important factors in reducing anxiety. Additionally, personal care items such as deodorant, water bottles, and lip balm are vital for our middle school students, who often need access to them during the day. Supporting their physical comfort directly influences their ability to participate actively and successfully in speech lessons.

Sensory items play a crucial role in helping our students regulate their emotions and maintain focus during speech sessions. Items such as wiggle seats, sensory toys, calming wall decor, and a comfortable seat provide the sensory input many of our students need to stay attentive and reduce stress. These sensory supports help students to engage fully with their speech goals, improvement, and build their confidence.
