I have eight students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.
We do a variety of activities throughout the day in our classroom. Students are working together as a whole group, in small groups and independently. When students are working independently at their desks they often need some guidance to keep working or stay in their seat. Monitoring eight students at eight different desks can get a little complicated.
My students need tables to replace our desks to make it easier to complete tasks independently and work together.
Working at two tables instead of at eight desks makes it easier for adults to monitor children. It also helps to encourage a collaborative environment. Students are working together at a table during small group time and having more tables allows us to use the tables for social skills and other activities where we need to spread out in smaller groups.
We are changing the design of our classroom next year to make it an even better space than it already is for the students. Replacing desks with tables not only allows students to work together and have a space to work independently but it creates more space in other areas of the classroom. Tables do not take up as much room as desks so we will be able to have more room in our carpet areas for whole group activities such as morning meeting, reading and story time. These two tables will allow us to transform our space and allow kids more opportunities to interact with each other.
