I teach a group of amazing students with Autism. My classroom is specialized for students who are not able to be in the general education setting. My students' abilities range from severe with a focus on communication and functional skills to children who need access to the general education curriculum with support in social and academic skills.
Even though my students have disabilities I expect them to try their best and make progress at their level.
For some, it is to learn how to use more than one word to communicate. Others could be to attend general education classes to access an academic area.
My Project
As we are learning and growing within our classroom we have found that we could do more to help students succeed if we had a system/learning center they could do completely independently once modeled and trained how. Often times with students on the low functioning end of the Autism Spectrum come to rely on parents and staff in their life to work them through their day.
By implementing a task box system with activities a student can navigate independently through a picture schedule, teaching students to move through their day with less reliance on adults and empowering them for a more independent future.
The materials being requested serve many purposes from the creating of the task box activities that are switched and rotated monthly, to the containers that will hold the activities and baskets to show completion of their learning tasks. The plastic cutting boards are a SPED teacher's best friend as they will serve as a mounting board for their expected tasks and is almost nearly indestructible.
With many man hours and Netflix marathons, task box creating will take place of copying, laminating, cutting, velcroing, and finally completed in the photo boxes allowing for years of use and learning.
