Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a classroom of 22 first grade students in the South Bronx. My students have really progressed this year in their writing, and I am gearing up for our next unit, which focuses on writing poetry. This unit will consist of exposing my class to many different forms and topics of poems, so my students can learn styles and strategies of other poets to use in their own work. In order to show my students the variety of possible styles they can write their poems in and make the poetic process come alive I am requesting the following books: "Read Aloud Books for the Very Young" This book contains poems in a variety of styles and voices for me to read during my Reader's and Writer's workshop minilessons. This will demonstrate how poems do not solely follow one format, but can be read/written in many different ways. "Poetry Galore and More with Shel Silverstein" This book not only has amazing Shel Silverstein poems, but also includes activities for me to take my students' reading of poems to the next level on Bloom's Taxonomy (i.e. moving from having them analyze poems solely on the literal level, up to inferential thinking). "The Random House Book of Poetry for Children" (one for each student in my class) This book is perfect for my students to have as their aid in the poetry units. It is filled with a variety of poems on different levels so there is are poems to accomodate each student's reading level. With these books, I will have distinct poems to use during minilessons to show my students a variety of styles they can use as inspiration. I will have lesson plan ideas focusing on teaching poetry with the help of Shel Silverstein's poetry, and each of my 22 students will have his or her own reference book of poems to read and connect with their own work as poets.
