My students need a vast classroom library of high quality literature in order to help them overcome their learning delays and foster a lifelong love of reading!
Remember when you were a young student learning how to read? Do you remember the strategies you used, and the people who helped you along the way? Now imagine trying to do that without having ever heard a word or a sound in your life. That is what it is like for my students.
My students are deaf and hard-of-hearing.
They attend an inner city school for the deaf in the Bronx. We have limited resources for books and materials. American Sign Language is their first language, and many of the children come from homes that don't even speak English. The students have severe language delays that impede their ability to read. Every day is a struggle for them as they try and learn to read. However, they are very eager and are always trying their best.
My Project
Reading is a basic and essential life skill that is made extremely difficult without the ability to hear. When it comes to reading, one of the best ways to learn and improve is through exposure to many, many books and lots of hands on experience. Unfortunately, books are not in abundance at our inner city school. My goal is to build a vast classroom library of high quality literature in order to help my students overcome their delays, learn to read, and foster a lifelong love of reading.
Through the use of an exciting and welcoming classroom library right at their fingertips every day, the sky is the limit for my students!
By building these important skills and improving their reading abilities now, it will be a launching point for them to insure a successful future as they move forward in school and eventually into the working world as productive adults.
