My students from Davenport are part of one of the fastest growing communities in Central Florida. Our elementary school had over 1,400 students last year from many diverse cultures and backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school, which means that the majority of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Due to the socioeconomic status of the school, all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My third graders are bright, creative, and have a Growth Mindset to help them succeed.
Because they have been retained in third grade, many of them are resistant to reading, but they still have a positive attitude about school and learning.
My Project
The books I am requesting for our class library include some high interest, lower reading level books to encourage reading, as well as high interest, higher level books accompanied by audio to make them accessible to my striving readers. In addition, many of the books I am requesting are bilingual books to motivate the interests of the English Language Learners in my classroom. In order to make the library even more inviting, I have selected several flexible seating options to pique the interest of the students and spark their interest.
It is my hope that our new, high-interest classroom library will inspire a love of reading to last a lifetime and encourage my students to begin the journey back to reading on grade level.
