I am a kindergarten teacher in an inner-city public school in NW DC. There are 23 children in my classroom. One of my goals this year is to enrich the science standards by providing resources and materials to enable my students to explore their curiosities of insects beyond traditional educational methods. One of the ways that I would like to do this is by providing an insect zoo for my students. In establishing an insect zoo, emphasis will be placed on the importance of insects in the environment and the role of beneficial insects. The children will learn to distinguish insects and their relatives from other animals. To achieve our goal, the theme will incorporate observation, graphing, classification, and all other subject areas to further each child's level of understanding. Also, parents will be able to share their knowledge and participate in our scientific studies. To create an insect zoo, I am requesting microscopes, an ant farm, a butterfly pavilion, a bug habitat, a bug table light, and an ant hill, among other insect accessories. Through observation, the students will contrast the eating habits, growth cycles, forms of movement, and sizes of the creatures. They will create drawings based on their observations and add them to a journal or scrapbook. It is hoped that you will help us achieve our goals for this unit of study. Thanks in advance for your help.
