Creating a Calming Classroom Environment and Utilizing Technology!

My Students

I teach at a public elementary school on the island of Maui in Hawaii. My school is a Title I school with a largely socioeconomically​ disadvantaged student population. 65% of our students participate in the free and reduced lunch program. We have a population of over 700 highly diverse students with a wide variety of backgrounds, ethnicity, abilities, and individual needs. Students speak multiple languages and 30% of our students are English Language Learners. Students benefiting from my project will range from Kindergarten through 5th graders.

My Project

I am a special education teacher in an inclusion classroom. We have students who are sensitive to the environment around them, like lighting. The light covers will be used to reduce the intensity of the florescent lighting for our students. This lighting will make the room feel more comfortable and warm. We will use the speaker to play calming music that soothe stress and anxiety of our students. We will use the diffuser for essential oils that will contribute to the calming classroom environment. Some oils assist the body to get into a rest and restore mode and other oils stimulate the brain to help students focus. Lastly, the Apple TV will make a difference in our students' learning by utilizing teaching applications offered by Apple. Our students will be able to experience what learning with technology can look like. By pairing our class iPad to the Apple TV, we can teach through our projector. My students are always looking to participate in technology-based activities and this Apple TV will offer so much for them. This would be such a great classroom addition that will allow us to utilize technology to its fullest potential.
