Creating a Calm Space for the Classroom

Help me give my students a place to calm down. Take time to breathe and reflect on how they are feeling.

My Students

Third graders are full of fun and eager to learn new things about the world they live in. During the past year and a half with the pandemic, students have had feelings that sometimes are hard for them to describe. This was a traumatic experience for them. I love how my students stood strong during this time. Even with certain challenges like having to wear masks and going into quarantine, they continued to learn and grow.

Social-emotional skills can be used to help them identify and reset if their feelings become distressing.

These are life skills that will help them with future challenges.

My Project

Creating a Calm Corner is where students will take a five-minute break to calm down. In this corner, students will evaluate how they are feeling. Have access to some sensory toys to assist with calming down. A cozy place to reset and time to read about feelings and how to calm themselves.

Giving students a place to go before they get out of control has been found to assist them in taking time to self monitor and refresh.

After spending five minutes in this corner they will be refreshed and ready to try again.
