This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Over the past five years, I have been lucky to work with five incredible groups of young people. Each year, I have learned an immense amount from my students. One key takeaway has been that students learn best when they are in a classroom environment that is flexible, has resources that can meet both their academic and basic needs, and is calm and welcoming.
In order for my classroom environment to be as welcoming and conducive to learning as possible, I plan to set up flexible seating, soft lighting, and a resource cart that can ameliorate students’ basic needs so that they can fully focus on learning.
Therefore, I am requesting soft lamps as a substitute for harsh fluorescent lighting, comfortable seating options like bean bag chairs, and supplies for the resource cart. The resource cart will include personal hygiene supplies, fidget tools, and extra school supplies that students may need from time to time. This cart will help students quickly and independently take care of their basic needs so that they can focus entirely on learning. Meanwhile, lamps and flexible seating will provide students with a healthy, accessible, and comfortable physical space.
The young people with whom I work are brilliant, compassionate, and curious. With this project, I hope to set up a classroom space that is both worthy of their incredible presence and will actively support their learning and well-being.
