This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

A calming corner is an essential resource in an ICT classroom. It offers students a safe and supportive space to manage their emotions, self-regulate, and return to learning ready and focused. For students with special needs, emotional regulation can be a significant challenge, and moments of overstimulation, frustration, or anxiety are typical. A designated calming area provides them with the tools and environment to work through these feelings constructively.

Equipped with sensory toys, an affirmation mirror, and comforting visuals, a calming corner helps students recognize their emotions and practice self-soothing strategies.

For instance, a child feeling overwhelmed by noise or activity can retreat to the calming corner to use sensory items, like fidget toys, which help ground them and reduce stress. This break allows them to reset and return to classroom activities with renewed focus.

Beyond emotional regulation, a calming corner fosters independence. It teaches students to identify when they need a break and empowers them to use strategies to self-calm. These are skills they can carry beyond the classroom, benefiting their interactions and learning for life.

Incorporating a calming corner into our classroom demonstrates a commitment to meeting the individual needs of each student. By providing this resource, we create an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed.
