My Students
I am lucky to teach an amazing group of children with intellectual disabilities in my special education self contained classroom. My students love school! They look forward to coming to our classroom everyday, and interacting with their peers. They also enjoy learning. They are excited for all academic lessons and activities. They show great pride when they complete lessons, and achieve goals.
One goal I have for all of my students is for them to learn to complete work independently.
This can be very challenging for them. Academic activities, such as literacy and math, can be difficult for them to complete without guidance. The children want to be independent, and I do my best to help them achieve this goal!
My Project
iPads are greatly needed in my classroom. Currently, we do not have an iPad for every student. The apps we use focus on building literacy, math and fine motor skills. The apps allow me to customize a profile for each student to meet their educational needs. However, with many apps, they can only be customized for one child per iPad. That leaves some students without a customized iPad to meet their needs.
Having an iPad for each student is also one way a child can learn to work independently in my classroom.
During our classroom rotations, when it is their turn for the app focus of the activity, they feel prideful when independently getting an iPad and opening the app they will be using. They will also help one another if a peer is having difficulty with their iPad. We have found wonderful apps for the children in our special education program that are interactive, and can easily be used by student's without a teacher's support. My student's light up when accomplishing anything independently.
As a Special Education teacher, I work to ensure that my students have the same opportunities as general education students. This includes my classroom being 1:1 with technology like our general education classes. I want them to be exposed to 21st Century learning so they will have a better understanding of the world around them.
By donating to this project, you will not only help build a child's academic foundation, but also assist in achieving the social/emotional goal of independence.
