My students need science materials, including Weekly Reader magazine, a digital microscope with slides, and science journals to record their observations.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help bring the world of exploration and experimentation to first grade students!
My students are all learning English as a second language.
Our school is in a high poverty area where all students are provided with free breakfast and lunch. Our school is also one of the oldest in the neighborhood, almost 100 years old, and we don't have many new resources to share with the children. Most of my students are very excited about learning and often look for ways to show off their skills.
My Project
The Weekly Reader subscription includes a magazine made just for 1st graders, and has kid-friendly articles touching on a variety of topics, with a scientific spin. Students will be able to review the Readers in class, and then take the Readers home to share what they have learned with their families.
A digital microscope can be used with prepared slides, while attached to the classroom television. Using a large screen will allow for better classroom discussion. Additionally, the other requested materials will be used to learn through having fun.
With the help of the Science Journals, students can record their observations and ideas, and refer back to them for many years to come.
My students rarely have a chance to go outside of their neighborhood and explore new things.
Your donation will help provide materials that give them a chance to explore new ideas and perform observations. Ideally, this will lead to a new level of excitement about the world around them and encourage the students to explore more and become life-long learners.
