My Project
Hello, I teach sixth-grade social studies in an urban middle school. My students attend a Title I school which means the majority of my students are low-income learners. My students are resilient and determined. So much so, that it fuels my passion to help them improve reading and writing skills while taking charge of their personal history.
Our class needs your support while we will be study Ancient Egypt and integrate multiple hands on activities.
One group will create their own version of a pyramid out of popsicle sticks while the other will work on the mummification of an apple.
Students will get the opportunity to mummify an apple in a canopic jar while creating a scene that includes a pyramid. The class will create the canopic jar using a pringles can that will house the mummified apple. Then we will integrate art by using clay to sculpt Egyptian style canopic jars. Students will then study how their specific mixture preserved the apple and compare it to other groups. This places students in the role of ancient Egyptians who mummified their loved ones.
This project will serve as the students' showcase piece that will be displayed to the entire school community. The student showcase is an opportunity for students to present their learning to family members, faculty, and district officials.
