I am a special education teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district where the students in my building are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom such as trauma and students in transition (homeless). Students live in the city which has a lot of trauma; gang violence, shootings, and homelessness, etc. One of the biggest challenges at our Middle School is that we do not have a STEAM technology lab. Our students are interested in pursuing STEAM careers and sadly our school does not have the resources needed for an innovative STEAM lab.
Our goal is to provide our students with an Innovation Lab so that their imagination can be sparked through hands-on experimentation. Students will have the opportunity to be creative and to make changes to existing concepts or develop their own ideas, methods or creations.
The Innovation Lab will be utilized to create real-world applications to strengthen learned classroom concepts.
Our students will be able to practice creating solutions to real-world problems and practical applications in plant science, engineering/robotics, and technology such as coding and renewable energy technologies.
This lab will also allow students to experiment, test, evaluate, and create in this space. Our students will learn how to take failure in stride and turn it into a learning experience and learn not to become discouraged or frustrated when something doesn’t go as planned.
Finally, the Innovation Lab will provide students opportunities to sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills and develop a wide range of 21st-century skills such as flexibility, collaboration, adaptability, oral and written communication, information technology literacy, creativity, productivity, social skills, leadership, and initiation.
