My Students

My students come are a diverse group of struggling learners who come from all over New York City to attend our small public school.
Many of our students lost power, heat, transportation during the hurricane and are still struggling to make it to school and get through the day. Most of the students in my classroom are 3-5 years behind grade level, and have never had the consistency or routine of reading on a regular basis.
My classroom provides them with shared reading texts, as well as the opportunity to explore their own interests and passions through reading books of their choice. My kids are desperate to get their hands on new, engaging young adult literature, but it can be very expensive to keep up a classroom library with new books.
My Project
The wonderful list of books I have selected will serve many purposes. My students will benefit from reading these incredible books because the word exposure will help them improve their vocabulary and reading endurance.
These books also provide the opportunity for me (the teacher) to conference with students about their reading goals and abilities.
As noted in the Charles Eliot quote above, sometimes a good book can be the greatest gift a struggling teenager can receive.
These books will become gifts to dozens of teenagers who I teach, and will be used year after year. The gift of reading is one that can never truly have a value put on it. But thank you in advance for considering my students.
