Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think different, is what we are encouraged to do by Apple. However despite living in a world dependent on computers, there are no State standards for computer literacy until High School! I integrate computer skills into my teaching schedule, but we need better computers to work with.

All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.

In my upper level ESL classes about half of the children have been in the United States less than 5 years, my beginning class 100% of students have been in the U.S. less than 2 years. I teach math, English, art, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning Middle School students in a high-need community. This is not a self contained classroom, over the course of a day I teach over 60 non-English speaking students (but not at the same time). Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Tagalog. 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended privates schools in their home countries, and others students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system. All my students have is curiosity and potential!

My Project

My students need 1 notebook computer. As you can imagine, the uses for this notebook will be endless! Students will be taught how to use the notebook for various math, science, art, and English. The main use of the computer will be for students to have equal access to technology. Basic skills, such as typing, are lacking because students are not used to using computers for education. Shockingly many students primary typing and word processing skills are learned from Facebook! During writing, students will learn to type papers on word processing programs such as Apple's Pages. Along with activities in math, reading, and writing, students will have opportunities to conduct Internet research for Science and Social Studies projects, use educational websites, and create multimedia presentations. Using the computer for these tasks will save students time, while increasing productivity and learning. Plus they will become familiar with computer skills necessary for college and the job market.

"I’m a very big believer in equal opportunity as opposed to equal outcome.

Equal opportunity to me, more than anything, means a great education. Maybe even more important than a great family life. We could make sure that every young child in this country got a great education." -Steve Jobs Will you be the person who will help create equal opportunities for a new generation?
