Create More Interest in Reading Through Literature Circles

My Project

My students are exceptionally bright and compassionate. They are part of the gifted and talented program in our district. While some of them like to read, many of them avoid reading outside of what they are assigned in school. To help increase interest in reading, I have implemented literature circles as part of my curriculum.

Enabling students to choose their book through carefully organized Literature Circles will increase interest in reading as students interact with their peers in productive discussions about their book choices.

In literature circles, students are given a choice of several titles that center around a specific theme. They read the book and meet several times with group members to actively discuss and share thoughts and opinions about the book. Each student is given a specific focus or role that they explore as they read a designated section of the book. Roles include Discussion Director, Illuminator, Word Finder, Illustrator, Quote Analyzer, and Fact Checker.

I currently have a limited number of specific titles for students to choose from in the Diversity category. As a result, some students end up having to read a book that might not have been their first choice. If this project is funded, I will be able to add the necessary titles to my literature circle library so that students can choose the book that interests them the most. I am also hoping to add additional copies of the Romeo and Juliet graphic novel, which makes this unit more engaging and interesting.
