My Students
The kindness of strangers keeps my classroom going...and my kids reading!
I am seeking your help to secure several new high-interest books to supplement my current classroom library. The books range from fiction, to non-fiction....memoir to self-help.
Our students are a diverse, kind-hearted and wonderful group of kids who have a variety of needs.
Since we are a Title I school, most of our students if not all qualify for free lunch, and they don't just rely on us for an education, but they also rely on us for life skills and habits. We take that challenge very seriously at our school, and my classroom is centered around fostering the love of reading.
My Project
My students need new books such as The List, Thirteen Reason, James Lebron and Working in College Sports for our independent reading library. My students read for an hour per week in class as well as for two hours weekly outside of the class. Reading has become a joy for my students because I let them pick their OWN independent reading books on a variety of topics. They may read about a famous NBA player, they may learn how to open a bank account, or they may read a mystery or love story. As long as they are reading, it is okay in my class!
This project will make all the difference for my kids because they need variety to stay engaged and invested in reading.
Although we read class texts together that may be more of the "classics", my independent reading program is really what fuels them to be life-long readers. I certainly cannot buy all these books myself, and nor can my school with the kind of budget we are working with. Your generosity in the form of good old fashioned books will go a long way in my classroom!
